 A very special movement

We have been privileged to design the first watch powered by the Tag Heuer 1887 movement (designed and built in house by Tag Heuer). The 1887 movement, engineered to ensure Tag Heuer’s successful future, deserved an iconic timepiece design - the Carrera 1887, first showcased at Baselworld 2010.

   Minimalist Origins

The original Carrera watch, dating back to 1963, is a watch born out of a desire to make a chronograph with outstanding readability.  Compared to earlier chronographs, it was very much more minimalist in look, doing away with anything that was not necessary.  When creating the Carrera 1887, we looked towards the same objective,  aiming to create a watch that expressed the value of the 1887 movement through refinement and elegance.

 Balance

Several prototypes were developed, refined and optimized to create the precise and desired proportion between the face, the indexes and the counters.  We spent a lot of time experimenting, trying different lengths of hour indexes, or minute markings, trying literally hundreds of combinations, to ensure we had the optimum balance  between all the elements.

 Prestige

A prestigious movement, the Carrera 1887 has a prestigious price tag.  Taking a design in such a minimalist direction , expressing value not through intricacy and flashy finishes, but through balance and refinement takes a lot of courage from a brand.  We are very happy to be working with a brand – TAGHeuer - that has this courage.  We were therefore thrilled when the 1887 went on to win the GPHG, thereby justifying their bravery.
